He did it!

Should have done it much, much sooner, but I'll take it.
Joe Biden has withdrawn from the race for the US presidency.

[...]

Biden thanked the vice-president, Kamala Harris, in his letter, but did not endorse her as his successor on the ticket. He said he planned to speak to the nation in more detail later this week.

One of Pod Save America's crew (and Obama speech writer) who wanted Biden to drop out...

Yes She Can!

And the plaudits and praise for Joe will now be coming out of the woodwork.  Eg....

Yes, Joe did the right thing.  And not a moment too soon.

I wonder if it's because Nancy Pelosi called his bluff when he told her polls showed him defeating Trump.  She reportedly told him to get his pollster on the horn and bring her the proof.  I'm guessing he didn't have it.  If that's a true story, Joe may have actually thought they did have the proof when he told her that and was surprised with the reality.  However it happened, hallelujah!

UPDATE 04:18 pm:

And this is what he gave us by not stepping down sooner...
Mike Johnson, the House speaker and a Trump loyalist, issued a statement calling on Biden to also resign the presidency, as well as suspending his candidacy for re-election.

“If Joe Biden is not fit to run for president, he is not fit to serve as president. He must resign the office immediately. November 5 cannot arrive soon enough,” Johnson said.

He also attempted to paint Biden’s decision to stand aside as a coup staged by the Democratic party, a position that became a popular talking point for Republicans and the Trump campaign in recent days.

“We must be clear about what just happened. The Democrat party forced the Democrat nominee off the ballot, just over 100 days before the election,” Johnson said.

“Having invalidated the votes of more than 14 million Americans who selected Joe Biden to be the Democrat nominee for president, the self-proclaimed ‘party of democracy’ has proven exactly the opposite.

Attacking Democrats for “removing” their leader was a familiar theme among other leading Republicans, even though Biden said the decision and its timing were his alone.

And the timing was bad.

But, the GOP is running scared now.

UPDATE 07:55 pm:

I don't know if it wavered, but it had a little competition with what was best for Biden.  Nancy Pelosi demanding to see the polls he was telling her were in his favor, and the fact that he's sick and isolated probably had the most to do with his decision.  Whatever it was, we can be very grateful.

Back to whining.
