The Christian “rabbi” who offered a prayer for the weekend’s victims of neo-Nazi terror at a rally with Vice President Mike Pence on Monday believes that Jews who do not accept Christ as their savior go to hell.

Wearing a Jewish prayer shawl, Loren Jacobs invoked “Yeshua,” a Hebrew word for Jesus, in his prayers for Republican candidates at the start of the Oakland County rally, near Detroit. Pence later called on Jacobs, whom he described as “a leader in the Jewish community here in Michigan,” to offer a special prayer for the victims of the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting and their families.

Jacobs, who leads the messianic congregation Shema Yisrael in Bloomfield Hills, again invoked Jesus in his remarks.

“Lord, I pray that we would see fewer and fewer horrible tragedies like this. And I pray this ‘beshem Yeshua’ — in the name of Jesus,” he concluded.

Jacobs was not ordained by a recognized Jewish rabbinical school, according to his congregation’s website.

Well, there's a surprise.

Instead, his web biography states that he graduated from the Jewish studies program at the Moody Bible Institute, a Christian institution, and holds a bachelor’s degree in biblical studies from Northeastern Bible College, another Christian institution. He was raised in a conventional Jewish household and became “messianic” — embraced Jesus as his personal savior — in 1975, according to the bio.

Jordan Acker, a Jewish Democrat running for the University of Michigan’s Board of Regents, tweeted in response, “Nobody thinks you’re not Jewish. They think that you’re deeply insensitive for bringing a group on stage [whose] entire mission is to convert Jews 3 days after the worst anti-Semitic attack in American Jewish history.”

Before Saturday, Oct. 27, relatively few people were familiar with Gab, the fringe social network developed as an alternative to Twitter and Facebook. By the end of the day, however, media outlets from Reuters to CNN had issued “explainers” on Gab as a online haven for far-right extremism online. The New York Times published a profile of the site by the following day. The surge of attention cast Gab’s future into doubt as PayPal pulled its service from the platform; then Gab lost its hosting provider, and next, its domain name service provider. As of Oct. 29, anyone visiting gab.ai is greeted with an announcement from CEO Andrew Torba stating that Gab has been forced offline: The site, he wrote, “has been no-platformed by essential internet infrastructure providers at every level. We are the most censored, smeared, and no-platformed startup in history.”

Gab’s users have posted their fair share of racist, anti-Semitic and all-around hateful content over the two years of Gab’s existence. But what led to Gab’s downfall was a single post by Robert Bowers, the man charged by the Justice Department for murdering 11 people in a Pittsburgh synagogue on the morning of Oct. 27. Minutes before his act of violence, Bowers, whose Gab account was full of viciously anti-Semitic posts, wrote on the platform: “I can’t sit by and watch my people get slaughtered. Screw your optics, I’m going in.”

And by "his people" being "slaughtered", he was talking about the Jewish Center's support for the immigrant Caravan making its way up from Honduras. He thinks they're coming to "slaughter" whites. Where would he get an idea like that?

In August 2017, after the violent white supremacist rally in Charlottesville that resulted in the murder of a young woman, a string of domain-name services pulled hosting from the neo-Nazi website, the Daily Stormer. The website had published an article crowing over the death of the murdered woman, Heather Heyer: “Woman Killed in Road Rage Incident was a Fat, Childless 32-Year-Old Slut.” Days later, the content delivery network and security service provider Cloudflare—famous, as the tech site the Verge wrote, “for never banning anything”—kicked the Daily Stormer off its service as well, removing the protection that had allowed the site to weather the distributed denial of service attacks targeted against it as a form of vigilante justice. The Daily Stormer vanished from the web, though it quickly resurfaced on a series of ever-more-obscure top-level domains.

And Gab will resurface, too.

Eleven members of the Pittsburgh affiliate of Bend the Arc: A Jewish Partnership for Justice penned a letter to Trump following the Saturday shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue.

“Our Jewish community is not the only group you have targeted,” the group wrote. “You have also deliberately undermined the safety of people of color, Muslims, LGBTQ people, and people with disabilities. Yesterday’s massacre is not the first act of terror you incited against a minority group in our country.”

“The Torah teaches that every human being is made b’tzelem Elohim, in the image of God. This means all of us,” the leaders wrote. “In our neighbors, Americans, and people worldwide who have reached out to give our community strength, there we find the image of God.”

At least four people were dead and six injured after a gunman opened fire during a service at a synagogue on Saturday morning, city officials said.

The caption read: “Why hello there HIAS! You like to bring in hostile invaders to dwell among us?”

And hours before the shooting, the account posted again: “HIAS likes to bring invaders in that kill our people. I can’t sit by and watch my people get slaughtered. Screw your optics, I’m going in.”
