Glad to see Juliana won yesterday's Illinois primary for Senate

She'll take Dick Durbin's seat (and good riddance to Dick) if she wins over whoever her Republican challenger will be in November. I expect she will. Her fellow primary candidates were Raja Krishnamoorthi - a well-known Democratic Congressman who outspent her by about 5 times and might have been expected to win - and Robin Kelly.

They're alive!

Meanwhile, the House is stuck with Mike Ass Kisser Johnson as Speaker, and the Republicans are on indefinite vacation.

I should fucking hope so

But I am rather surprised that John Fetterman would cooperate.

Voting tomorrow on crypto

Dems were put off recently by phone calls and emails.  The danger is back.

Dick saw the handwriting on the wall

Too bad he sided with Chuck Schumer on going along with the Senate Republicans to thwart the House Democrats solidarity stance against the Republican funding bill.  Democratic voters did not appreciate it.

Okay, Illinois, what have we got to replace him?  Give us a young progressive to vote with our great Senator Tammy Duckworth.

Pennsylvania special election - hopefully a trend

Governor Josh Shapiro released a statement as the race came to a close, stating, “Tonight in Lancaster County, Pennsylvanians rejected a candidate who embraced the extremism and division coming out of DC. In a district carried comfortably by Donald Trump just a few months ago, they chose a better way forward – an embrace of competence, commonsense, and a desire to bring people together.”

[T]he county voter registration shows District 36 as 53% Republican and about 30% Democrat, with the remainder portion being unaffiliated or belonging to minor parties.

The flip could be attributed to a low voter turnout, charting lower than 30%.

  MSN
Or, maybe not even Republicans want to vote for another Republican any more.

Amish country.  So how many voters woke up and realized Trump didn't mean it when he said he'd get us out of wars?

Turn about is fair play

Sure, Senate Dems refused to back House Dems on the CR, but now they're demanding the House "act quickly" to bail  them out.

Bullshit.

UPDATE 03/16/2025:

Schumer must go.

Democrats scramble

Ben Meiselas discusses the early swearing-in of Democrats Adam Schiff and Andy Kim as U.S. Senators, surprising and infuriating MAGA Republicans. Both Schiff and Kim won their elections, and were given gubernatorial approval to be sworn-in early due special circumstances, allowing them to gain seniority and participate in key Senate hearings. Kim is replacing disgraced Senator Bob Menendez in New Jersey, and Schiff is filling the seat once held by Dianne Feinstein, who passed away in September of 2023.

[...]

Meiselas also highlights Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s efforts to secure Democratic control of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) by advancing the nominations of Lauren McFerrin and Joshua Didleberg; a move to shield the Board from figures like Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and other Trump allies, who want to weaken the NLRB's power to protect American workers.

And, they'll do it

This is why he needed to win the Senate.  Going forward, we don't have a Senate (and possibly House) or Supreme Court who give two cents for the Constitution.

Say goodbye to America.

...but hey, do what you want...you will anyway.

Inch by inch

Opposed by McConnell.

Now it goes to the entire Senate.

What they need to do is change the rule that says it only takes one Senator to hold up everything.

...but hey, do what you want...you will anyway.

To be continued...

GOP SNAFU

The stalemate in the House is forcing the Senate to pick up the legislative slack and take the lead on spending.

[...]

There is less than a month before the next government shutdown deadline, with the House having effectively zapped three weeks of the stopgap bill that helped cost Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) the Speakership earlier this month.

The Senate is also set to work up the White House’s $105 billion supplemental package that includes aid for Israel and Ukraine in their battles against Hamas and Russia, respectively.

This leaves lawmakers with a time crunch as they hope to get the work done before Thanksgiving without much help from across the Capitol complex, where funding legislation normally originates.

[...]

The effort on the Israel and the Ukraine fronts in Congress are being shepherded by the two Senate leaders. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) has been a leading proponent for the boost in funds, saying in a statement after Biden announced his plan that it “sends a clear message to America’s friends and allies that we have your back.”

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) also appeared on a pair of Sunday talk shows last week to talk up the need for funds to help the two war-torn countries, having said on Friday that the situation requires “decisive action” by the upper chamber.

  The Hill
House Republicans haven't been listening to Mitch McConnell for years. And, you know what? Fuck Mitch McConnell. It's because of him we're still in this predicament. His leadership in the refusal to impeach Trump when he knew Trump was responsible for the January 6 insurrection (McConnell said so on February 13 following the failed coup), and his cheating bullshit packing the court with Trump nominees have brought us to the brink of losing democracy.

...but hey, do what you want...you will anyway.

She's dead

It's what they all wish - to die holding onto their cushy Senate job.

What happens now?
As three high-profile California Democrats vie to replace retiring Sen. Dianne Feinstein, Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom said in an interview with NBC's "Meet the Press" that he would not appoint any of them to the seat, should it become vacant sooner than expected.

  NBC
And it did.
Newsom said in the interview with Chuck Todd for NBC News' "Meet the Press" that airs Sunday that he would instead make an “interim appointment” to replace Feinstein if necessary.

“Yes. Interim appointment. I don’t want to get involved in the primary,” Newsom said. “It would be completely unfair to the Democrats that have worked their tail off. That primary is just a matter of months away. I don’t want to tip the balance of that.”

Senate dress rules

The Senate voted Wednesday night to require that business attire be worn on the floor of the chamber, following backlash from both sides over Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s (D-N.Y.) move to relax the dress code last week.

The resolution, from centrist Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), comes just over a week after Schumer announced he would loosen the Senate’s dress code, a move that was seen by some as a way to accommodate Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.), who is often spotted on Capitol Hill wearing shorts and hoodies instead of suits.

Republican and Democratic lawmakers alike criticized Schumer’s decision, with some calling it disrespectful to the upper chamber.

  The Hill
Nice to see they're taking care of the really important things.

...but hey, do what you want...you will anyway.

Beyond insane

Dems control the Senate.  Why won't they do something?  Same reasons they won't end the filibuster?

Disgraceful.

Simply inexcusable

The blockade from Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) on about 250 of the Pentagon’s general and flag officers has left the Marine Corps without a confirmed leader for the first time in 164 years.

Marine Corps Commandant Gen. David Berger officially retired on Monday, leaving Assistant Commandant Gen. Eric Smith as the acting commandant and leader of the military branch until he is confirmed in the Senate.

The last time the Marine Corps was left with an acting commandant was in 1859, when Archibald Henderson, the fifth commandant of the Marines, died at 76 without a successor in place.

[...]

Tuberville’s hold on the Pentagon nominees, which he began in March to protest the Defense Department’s new abortion policy, shows no signs of weakening, even as the block has sparked bipartisan frustration.

  The Hill
The Senate makes its own rules. It can change them. Why on earth do they have one that allows one person to have this power?

...but hey, do what you want...you will anyway.
