Meanwhile in Fox News troubles

Recall that Fox agreed to settle with Dominion voting machines company to the tune of $787.5 million in that defamation suit April last year to avoid a possible jury verdict awarding them the $1.6 billion Dominion was asking for.

Come April, OAN distribution will be downsized

DirecTV, which is owned by AT&T Inc. and TPG Inc., told The Hill they have notified Herring Networks Inc., the owner of OAN, that the contract between network and the service provider will not be renewed [in April 2022].

[...]

DirecTV is its largest distributor. Verizon Fios and smaller carries have maintained OAN, and it is available to stream online through KloudTV.

Actually, it's a Trumpy look

...but hey, do what you want...you will anyway.
During a Thursday press conference, Psaki said White House senior staff were engaging with “social media platforms” to combat the spread of “misinformation specifically on the pandemic.”

“In terms of actions we are taking or that we’re working to take, I should say, from the federal government, we’ve increased disinformation research and tracking within the surgeon general’s office. We're flagging problematic posts for Facebook that spread disinformation," she said.

[...]

The press secretary’s comments came just moments after Surgeon General Vivek Murthy issued an advisory about health misinformation or misinformation regarding the coronavirus pandemic.

Murthy described “false, misleading, or inaccurate information” as “one of the biggest obstacles that’s preventing us from ending this pandemic.”

How about you just hire some people to respond to those posts on Facebook correcting the ones you're "flagging"?

Cleaning up Trump's mess

CDT welcomes President Biden’s decision today to revoke the Trump Administration’s unconstitutional Executive Order 13925 regarding social media. Issued by former President Trump nearly a year ago, the Executive Order on “Preventing Online Censorship” was an effort by then-President Trump to chill online speech and interfere with efforts to fight election disinformation. CDT filed a First Amendment lawsuit against this Executive Order in June 2020.

“As we have consistently argued, President Trump’s Executive Order was an attempt to use threats of retaliation to coerce social media companies into allowing disinformation and hateful speech to go unchecked,” said Alexandra Givens, President & CEO of CDT. “The Biden Administration has rightly rejected this deeply flawed approach. We applaud the timely decision by President Biden to fully repeal this unconstitutional order.”

Murdoch's Empire of Lies includes the New York Post

The New York Post published a story on 23 April headlined “Kam on in”, which claimed that migrant children were being given a copy of the vice-president’s 2019 book, Superheroes Are Everywhere, as part of a welcome kit in Los Angeles.

Laura Italiano was credited with writing the story but on Tuesday she announced on Twitter that being told to write the “incorrect story” was her “breaking point” over working at the tabloid.

“Today I handed in my resignation to my editors at the New York Post,” she said. “The Kamala Harris story — an incorrect story I was ordered to write and which I failed to push back hard enough against — was my breaking point.

It was very foolish of her to quit AFTER writing the story. That will be on her resumé for the rest of her life.
The story was followed up by several rightwing outlets such as Fox News.
Of course. Another Murdoch property.

OAN staff doesn't even believe OAN's bullshit

In interviews with 18 current and former OAN newsroom employees, 16 said the channel had broadcast reports that they considered misleading, inaccurate or untrue.

[...]

The channel did not broadcast live coverage of Mr. Biden’s swearing-in ceremony and Inaugural Address. Into April, news articles on the OAN website consistently referred to Donald J. Trump as “President Trump” and to President Biden as just “Joe Biden” or “Biden.”

[...]

OAN has also promoted the debunked theory that the rioters who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6 were left-wing agitators.

[...]

Charles Herring, the president of Herring Networks, the company that owns OAN, defended the reports casting doubt on the election. “Based on our investigations, voter irregularities clearly took place in the November 2020 election,” he said. “The real question is to what extent.”

Herring Networks was founded by Mr. Herring’s father, the tech entrepreneur Robert Herring, who at age 79 runs OAN with Charles and another son, Robert Jr. About 150 employees work for the channel at its headquarters in San Diego.

  NYT
America's Murdochs
During the Trump presidency, [OAN] moved right, [Marty Golingan, a producer at the channel since 2016,] said. And when he was watching coverage of the pro-Trump mob breaking into the Capitol, he said, he worried that his work might have helped inspire the attack.

He added that he and others at OAN disagreed with much of the channel’s coverage. “The majority of people did not believe the voter fraud claims being run on the air,” Mr. Golingan said in an interview, referring to his colleagues.

He recalled seeing a photo of someone in the Capitol mob holding a flag emblazoned with the OAN logo. “I was like, OK, that’s not good,” Mr. Golingan said. “That’s what happens when people listen to us.”

[...]

Mr. Golingan added that, since Inauguration Day, OAN’s news director, Lindsay Oakley, had reprimanded him for referring to Mr. Biden as “President Biden” in news copy.

[...]

In a survey last month, Pew Research reported that 7 percent of Americans, including 14 percent of Republicans, had gotten political news from OAN. By contrast, 43 percent of Americans and 62 percent of Republicans had gotten political news from Fox News, the survey found.
Am I to understand that the other 30+ percent of Republicans don't get any political news at all? Or they just didn't want to say?
In a Reuters/Ipsos poll last month, about half of Republicans said they believed that the Jan. 6 attack, which left five dead, was largely a nonviolent protest or was the handiwork of left-wing activists. Six in 10 of Republicans surveyed said they also believed Mr. Trump’s claim that the election was “stolen.”

[...]

In a mid-November promotional ad, OAN accused Fox News of joining “the mainstream media in censoring factual reporting.”

[...]

The day after Trump supporters stormed the Capitol, Mr. Herring instructed OAN employees in an email, which The New York Times reviewed, to “report all the things Antifa did yesterday.”

[...]

Some [stories] are reported by Kristian Rouz, an OAN correspondent who had written for Sputnik, a site backed by the Russian government. In a report in May on the pandemic, Mr. Rouz said Covid-19 might have started as a “globalist conspiracy to establish sweeping population control,” one that had ties to Bill and Hillary Clinton, the billionaires George Soros and Bill Gates, and “the deep state.”

Ms. Britton, the former OAN producer, recalled checking a website that Mr. Rouz had cited to back some of his reporting. “It literally took me to this chat room where it’s just conservatives commenting toward each other,” she said.

[...]

Herring confirmed that about a dozen OAN workers had left in recent months, saying many of them were not high-level employees.

Fake News

CNN's Jake Tapper had a special last night on Trump's lies and the dangers they present.  (I never watch TV any more and was reminded why. Christ, there were so many commercials, it seemed like commercial and show time had switched places.  Is that normal, or did advertisers think this was going to be an extra-high viewer event?)

One of the dangers was connected to Trump's climate lies.  If people quit believing what scientists are telling them, we are all in peril of our very lives.  With that in mind...
The concentration of climate-heating greenhouse gases has hit a record high, according to a report from the UN’s World Meteorological Organization.

The jumps in the key gases measured in 2018 were all above the average for the last decade, showing action on the climate emergency to date is having no effect in the atmosphere.

  The Guardian
And you know the Republican, corporate and Trump admin response: it's too late, so let's party.
The rise in concentration of greenhouses gases follows inevitably from the continued surge in global emissions, which was described as “brutal news” for 2018. The world’s scientists calculate that emissions must fall by half by 2030 to give a good chance of limiting global heating to 1.5C, beyond which hundreds of millions of people will suffer more heatwaves, droughts, floods and poverty.

[...]

Petteri Taalas, the WMO secretary-general, said: “There is no sign of a slowdown, let alone a decline, despite all the commitments under the Paris agreement on climate change. We need to increase the level of ambition for the sake of the future welfare of mankind.

[...]

Three-quarters of the emissions cuts pledged by countries under the Paris agreement of 2015 are “totally inadequate”, according to a comprehensive expert analysis published earlier in November, putting the world on a path to climate disaster.
Monday’s surprise move by General Motors, Toyota and other auto giants to back President Trump in his fight with California over pollution rules came after days of White House pressure to support one of the administration’s biggest efforts to weaken climate regulations.

  NYT
I wouldn't call that a surprise.
Previously, many automakers had indicated to California that they would not take a stand, according to Mary D. Nichols, chairwoman of California’s clean air regulator, the Air Resources Board.

Late last week, their stance quickly changed.

Andrew Olmem, a top policy aide to Mr. Trump, began calling car companies to push them to sign on to the administration’s effort in the courts to eliminate California’s right to set its own auto emissions rules on planet warming pollution, a power granted under the Clean Air Act of 1970. He was joined on the phone in some cases by Justice Department officials, according to a person familiar with the matter.

[...]

Carmakers have long feared that Mr. Trump might retaliate, either with tariffs or trade restrictions, if they didn’t support his effort to dismantle the rules, which were designed to fight climate change. After California struck its deal with [four automakers: Ford, Honda, Volkswagen and BMW], the administration and Justice Department pushed a series of unusual legal and policy moves against the state and those companies — including an antitrust investigation — that were widely perceived as retaliatory.

[...]

The split among the auto giants is far more consequential than simply the pursuit of divergent legal strategies among corporate competitors. “This is a huge rift. These vehicle manufacturers are splitting up in unique ways,” said Barry Rabe, a professor of public and environmental policy at the University of Michigan. “Imagine an administration unleashed in a second term to confront any industry that does not do the political bidding of the president,” he said.

[...]

The Trump administration and the Justice Department have also pursued a host of legal measures against California and the car companies that have sided with it.

Last month, for example, days after California filed its suit fighting the administration’s revocation of its emissions authority, the Justice Department opened its antitrust inquiry into the four automakers that had joined with California. The administration also sent a letter to the state threatening to withhold federal highway funds if it did not comply with certain Environmental Protection Agency demands. And last week, the Justice Department sued California over its effort to extend its climate change initiative into Canada.
We are being run by a crime syndicate.
In September, the administration revoked the legal authority of California and other states to set their own standards.
Because Republicans are so deeply committed to States rights.
Separately, the E.P.A. and Transportation Department are working on a new rule, which they expect to publish this winter, rolling back the national fuel economy standard to about 40 miles per gallon.

That crafting of that rule — which Trump administration officials had expected to unveil in May — has been plagued with confusion and delays, as many people familiar with the process say that Mr. Trump’s appointees are struggling to prepare a plan that can withstand legal challenges.
That's why you pack the courts, right Mitch?

Republicans, corporations and the Trump administration may well be right about one thing: It's too late.

But, we know that the corporations knew what was happening back when it wasn't too late. So maybe they should be sued and made to pay for all the efforts we can possibly make to at least attempt to avert the climate disaster every serious report says we're headed for.

Another great idea

Let the military control information flow in this country.
Fake news and social media posts are such a threat to U.S. security that the Defense Department is launching a project to repel “large-scale, automated disinformation attacks,” as the top Republican in Congress blocks efforts to protect the integrity of elections.

  Yahoo
Are they working together?
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency wants custom software that can unearth fakes hidden among more than 500,000 stories, photos, video and audio clips. If successful, the system after four years of trials may expand to detect malicious intent and prevent viral fake news from polarizing society.
Sure, sure. We can trust DARPA.
U.S. officials have been working on plans to prevent outside hackers from flooding social channels with false information ahead of the 2020 election. The drive has been hindered by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s refusal to consider election-security legislation. Critics have labeled him #MoscowMitch, saying he left the U.S. vulnerable to meddling by Russia, prompting his retort of “modern-day McCarthyism.”

President Donald Trump has repeatedly rejected allegations that dubious content on platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Google aided his election win.

UPDATE 7/11:

Right on cue...

Actually, they can be forgiven for thinking that.  Trump has said as much himself.
July 5, 2019, 10:21 AM CDT / Updated July 5, 2019, 2:11 PM CDT

By Dartunorro Clark

President Donald Trump on Friday said he is looking at issuing an executive order to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census.

"We're thinking about doing that, we have four or five ways we can do it, it's one of the ways we're thinking about doing it very seriously," Trump said when asked about using an executive order to add the question.

"We can start the printing (of the census forms) now and maybe do an addendum after we get a positive decision, so we're working on a lot of things, including an executive order," he added.
