Equal Pay will never arrive in the US

Today is Equal Pay Day -- a day to acknowledge that on average, a woman had to work all of 2018 and this far into 2019 to earn what a man earned in 2018.

American women earn 20% less than men. On average, Black women are paid 61 cents, and Latinas 53 cents, for every dollar a white man earns. On top of that, women who choose to have a child lose 30% of their earnings permanently.

To all the women not being paid fairly, or who even have to wonder if they’re being paid fairly: I believe you deserve better. There are many things we need to do to make sure women have the same freedoms that men do. I‘d like to propose a new law mandating gender pay transparency.

For every large company, the US should publicly disclose a simple annual gender pay gap score: for every dollar the company paid to men, how much less did it pay to women?

We wouldn’t be the first to do this. The UK government instituted gender pay transparency in 2017.

This type of transparency encourages companies to do better by hiring, promoting, and retaining women and raising their pay. It allows workers to know which employers have glass ceilings and which ones are more equitable.

This isn't just about gender pay gaps within jobs. It's about supporting women along the entire career ladder.

[ Microsoft’s CEO] Satya Nadella, was speaking at a gathering of women technologists in Phoenix, Arizona, on Thursday, when he was asked for an advice on what he believed was the right way for women to ask for a pay raise.

"It's not really about asking for the raise, but knowing and having faith that the system will actually give you the right raises as you go along," Nadella said.

"Because that's good karma," he said. "It'll come back because somebody's going to know that's the kind of person that I want to trust."

One person who probably doesn’t need to ask for a pay raise is Nadella himself. His salary as Microsoft CEO is $1.2 million a year, the website IT Pro reported in February. He will also be eligible for a cash bonus of $3.6 million, the website reported, citing Microsoft’s statutory 8K filing.

There was so much backlash that Nadella was forced to apologize and say he was wrong (even though he surely didn’t mean it)…

“I believe men and women should get equal pay for equal work,” Nadella said in the email. “And when it comes to career advice on getting a raise when you think it’s deserved [...] . If you think you deserve a raise, you should just ask.”

So, now, ladies, you have permission.

Even the GOP Wouldn't Have Gone There Pre-9/11 (When EVERYthing Changed)

On Tuesday, Senator Scott Brown of Massachusetts joined every other REPUBLICAN in blocking a bill calling for equal pay for equal work for women.

There is an alibi, of course, just as there was when he voted with the REPUBLICANS against making student loans a little less usurious for the people going to college:

"Sen. Brown believes strongly in fair pay, and that employers who discriminate against women should be prosecuted aggressively," said Marcie Kinzel, his Senate spokesperson. "However, on the bill before the Senate, Sen. Brown believes it will put more burdens on small businesses and could lead to job losses at a time when our economy can least afford it."

[Brown] himself called it "the right cause but the wrong bill." We eagerly await his introduction of the right bill for that particular cause.
