A terrible win for Trump

The Trump administration was within its rights to demand that the University of Pennsylvania turn over information about Jews on campus as part of a federal investigation into discrimination at the school, a federal judge decided Tuesday.

The government’s investigation had united Penn leaders with Jewish students and faculty members as they opposed the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s subpoena. Many on campus drew parallels between the government’s approach and methods deployed in Nazi Germany.

No shit.

Trump's Nazis are saying they need the information to protect the Jews. And Judge Gerald J. Pappert allowed it. WTactualF?

Trump losing in court

And...

Secretary of State Marco Rubio personally approved the deportation of five student activists last year after receiving memos largely describing their participation in pro-Palestinian protests and their writings about the war in Gaza, according to internal government documents unsealed by a federal judge on Thursday.

The documents reveal new details about how the Trump administration decided to target the activists, who were all foreign students visible in campus protests. They had been in the United States legally but were arrested and threatened with deportation last spring.

[...]

Judge William G. Young, an appointee of President Ronald Reagan, ruled last year that the Trump administration had illegally targeted the students for deportation based on their speech — in particular their opposition to the Israeli government and its military operations in Gaza.

[...]

[The documents] also show that officials privately anticipated the possibility that the deportations might not hold up in court because much of the conduct highlighted could be seen as protected speech.

[...]

In one set of documents with the referrals, officials acknowledged that almost no grounds existed for deporting the students other than a rarely used 1952 law that says the secretary of state may deem noncitizens deportable for reasons related to foreign policy.

[...]

In justifying the attempt to deport the students, Mr. Rubio and other administration officials repeatedly asserted that they had supported terrorist organizations.

[...]

The students have denied that charge. They sued over their arrests, and judges last year ordered each of them released, citing concerns that their arrests had been based on protected speech.

The case before Judge Young, brought by two national academic organizations, argued more broadly that the arrests had chilled academic speech on the nation’s college campuses. Judge Young agreed, describing the behavior of Mr. Rubio and Kristi Noem, the homeland security secretary, as an “unconstitutional conspiracy” to “pick off” a few students with an eye to “violating” the free speech rights of thousands of noncitizen scholars.

Destruction of health and disease prevention infrastructure, education, and pretty much everything good

This will be one of the most disastrous effects of Trumpism, and among the hardest to restore.  In fact, there will be an entire body of research missing.  Hopefully, some other countries will be picking up the slack until (and if) the United States comes back on line.

As for layoffs in the government during shutdown specifically...

Right out loud.

This will be exhibit A in all the lawsuits for wrongful termination.

Rural hospitals shutting down is starting to break through.  So what to do?  They lie.  ALL THE TIME.  There has been some instance of rural hospital closings for several decades, but nothing to compare to what's happening after the Big Beautiful Billionaire Bonus.  It wasn't Joe Biden's policies that shut them down.

And that $50 billion?

SNAFU...

Fascists on the march

Texas A&M University’s president will step down after facing criticism over his handling of turmoil over a children’s literature course that recognized more than two genders, the university’s Board of Regents announced on Thursday.

President Mark Welsh’s last day will be on Friday, the board said. The move comes after the university fired the lecturer of the course, Melissa McCoul, and removed two administrators over the controversy. The issue caught national attention after a student filmed herself arguing with Dr. McCoul, citing President Trump, who has said his administration would push for the recognition of only two genders.

“President Welsh is a man of honor who has led Texas A&M with selfless dedication,” the university system’s chancellor, Glenn Hegar, said in a statement. He added, “At the same time, we agree that now is the right moment to make a change and to position Texas A&M for continued excellence in the years ahead.”

No child was involved.

Report your neighbors to the Stasi

This goes beyond just bending the knee.

I would expect some serious blowback from the students and faculty.
