America failing
...but hey, do what you want...you will anyway.Anthony Fauci, the administration’s top infectious disease doctor, told a House panel on Tuesday that rising U.S. cases of COVID-19 are “disturbing” as new signs emerged of the United States falling further behind other countries in containing the novel coronavirus.
The coronavirus is surging in more than half the country, and states like Florida, Texas and Arizona are setting records of new cases almost daily.
[...]
Fauci warned that without the ability to fully identify, isolate and trace the contacts of the infected individuals, the situation could worsen.
[...]
Fauci said time is running out to address the spikes in cases.
“Right now, the next couple of weeks are going to be critical in our ability to address those surgings that we’re seeing in Florida, in Texas, in Arizona and in other states,” Fauci told the House Energy and Commerce Committee Tuesday.
[...]
It was the first time members of the White House coronavirus task force appeared before Congress in over a month. The White House has also ended public briefings by officials from the group.
[...]
Trump has drastically scaled back the work of the task force and has encouraged states to reopen as quickly as possible, even as most don’t meet the administration’s own guidelines.
During a Fox News interview last week, Trump told Sean Hannity that the virus will “fade away” even without a vaccine.
Both Fauci and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Robert Redfield rejected that idea and said the virus will continue well into the fall and winter.
Redfield warned that the outbreak will overlap with flu season in the fall, which “could place a tremendous burden on the health care system.”
The inability of the U.S. to contain the coronavirus outbreak is being felt internationally as well. As the European Union reopens its borders, the region is reportedly considering banning all U.S. travelers given the worsening COVID-19 situation in the United States.

Dr. Fauci, your pink sliptweet is on its way
He thought Fauci was in his pocket, I guess."To me, it's not an acceptable answer," Trump told reporters at the White House, noting he was surprised by the response [top US infectious disease expert Anthony] Fauci gave to Senators in testimony to a Senate panel on Tuesday [about the dangers of reopening the economy too quickly].

Gee, Doc, we haven't controlled this one.Fauci, who directs the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, warned that a premature lifting of lockdowns could lead to additional outbreaks of the deadly coronavirus.
"There is a real risk that you will trigger an outbreak that you may not be able to control," Fauci said.
Cult of dear leader. The 79-year-old doctor, one of the US's most trusted voices on the coronavirus pandemic, has become a target for criticism from the American far right and online conspiracy theorists since he made statements about the outbreak that were at odds with Trump's.
...but hey, do what you want...you will anyway. The US has the largest coronavirus outbreak in the world by far: 1.37 million infections and more than 82,000 deaths, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.
Worldwide, the virus has infected more than 4.2 million people and killed some 292,000, according to the Johns Hopkins tally. Experts say the actual numbers are likely far higher.

A handful of US states started easing their lockdowns about two weeks ago, ranging from shopping malls in Texas to beach hotels in South Carolina to gyms in Wyoming. Georgia was one of the first states where some businesses were allowed to open their doors again, starting April 24 with barbershops, hair salons, gyms, bowling alleys and tattoo parlours.
But it may be five to six weeks from then before the effects are known, said Crystal Watson of Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security.

Blocked testimony
It worked so well during the impeachment hearings.
Really? Who would be better to testify than someone involved?Top United States health official Dr Anthony Fauci will not testify next week to a congressional committee examining the response to the coronavirus pandemic by the administration of US President Donald Trump, the White House said on Friday, calling it "counterproductive" to have individuals involved in the response testify.

...but hey, do what you want...you will anyway.Fauci's testimony was being sought for a May 6 hearing by a House Appropriations subcommittee that oversees health programmes, House Appropriations Committee spokesman Evan Hollander said.

White House spokesman Judd Deere said in a statement to Reuters news agency. "We are committed to working with Congress to offer testimony at the appropriate time."
