White House press secretary Sean Spicer on Friday denied that President Donald Trump tried to intimidate James Comey by tweeting about “tapes” of their conversations—which the President has since said he doesn’t actually possess—even as he claimed the tweet forced the former FBI director to “tell the truth.”

“I think the President made it very clear that he wanted the truth to come out. He wanted everyone to be honest about this and he wanted to get to the bottom of it and I think he succeeded in doing that.”

The "Tapes"

The Secret Service on Monday said it has no copies or transcripts of audio recordings made within the White House during President Donald Trump’s term so far.

“It appears, from a review of Secret Service’s main indices, that there are no records pertaining to your request that are referenced in these indices,” the Secret Service wrote to the Wall Street Journal in response to a Freedom of Information Act request.

As the Wall Street Journal noted, while the Secret Service installed recording systems for former presidents John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon, such recordings could also have been created or maintained by other means.

The National Archives and Records Administration, which governs materials subject to the Presidential Records Act (as such recordings would likely be), told the Wall Street Journal that contemporary presidential records are not subject to FOIA requests while the incumbent is in office.

So why did the Secret Service respond as it did?

House Intel Committee Wants Tapes

The House Intelligence Committee asked the White House on Friday to hand over any "White House recordings or memoranda of Comey's conversations exist now or have in the past," just moments after President Trump said he would soon say more about whether any tape recordings exist.

President Trump said he would testify under oath about his comments to former FBI director James Comey about the investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Irony escapes him. Petty Squabbling is his middle name. He's the one who urged people to squabble.
