There goes another one

The acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Ron Vitiello, has resigned amid an agencywide restructuring of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Vitiello had originally been nominated to take over the post permanently, but his nomination was abruptly pulled last week by President Trump, who said he wanted to go in a "tougher" direction.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Director Lee Francis Cissna, USCIS policy and strategy head Kathy Nuebel Kovarik and General Counsel John Mitnick are also reportedly due to resign.

Since it was reported they'd also be getting the boot.

Outgoing Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen announced the news of Vitiello's departure on Wednesday, praising his "knowledge and expertise as a seasoned law enforcement professional."

It's a shame they won't have any of those now.

Senate Republicans have openly warned in recent days of Miller's outsize influence in the DHS decisionmaking process in the wake of recent departures at the agency.

“I hope that [Trump's] got more voices than that one in his ear on these issues, because, yeah, I think it’s important that he get a whole perspective and range of opinions,” said Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.).

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) told The Washington Post on Monday that Trump is "pulling the rug out from the very people" working to accomplish his agenda on immigration.

"The president has to have some stability and particularly with the number one issue that he’s made for his campaign, throughout his two and a half years of presidency," Grassley said.

Chuck, John, you guys created this monster. What were you expecting to happen?

Further on the DHS shakeup

[U.S. Secret Service Director Randolph "Tex"] Alles learned from the White House that he would be part of a mass overhaul of DHS leadership a few weeks ago. The notification came prior to the security incident at Mar-a-Lago on March 30, a law enforcement official told CBS News.

  

So that answers that question.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Lee Cissna, DHS undersecretary for management Claire Grady and DHS general counsel John Mitnick are also leaving the administration. The officials' departures are part of a system-wide purge of senior management at DHS as top Trump adviser Stephen Miller looks to overhaul immigration-related policy and personnel.

Grady was the official standing in the way in December when the president wanted to oust Nielsen. The president would have had to place Grady in charge of DHS, given that she was the most senior Senate-confirmed official there.

He had to fire her so he could put in hard case Kevin McAleenan.

White House senior adviser Stephen Miller reportedly wants President Trump to fire at least two more senior Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials.

CNN, citing Trump administration officials, reported that Miller is pushing for director of United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, Lee Cissna, and the department's general counsel, John Mitnick, to be dismissed.

Miller, an advocate of hard-line immigration policies, has reportedly gained increasing clout inside the Trump administration. Trump recently told aides in the Oval Office that Miller was in charge of issues related to immigration and the border, a person familiar with the meeting told CNN.
