There is still some justice in the country

A federal judge on Friday dismissed a [ $250] million dollar defamation lawsuit against The Washington Post over its coverage of an interaction between a Kentucky high school student and a Native American activist on the National Mall, which gained national attention after the video went viral.

In the viral video, Sandmann appears to be wearing a Make America Great Again hat while smirking and staring down an older Native American man as he sings and beats a drum. The interaction hit a nerve on social media and Sandmann was castigated for apparently intimidating a person of color.

Judge William O. Bertelsman dismissed the suit, stating that the Post's coverage was protected as free speech and rejecting Covington Catholic High School student Nicholas Sandmann's argument that the newspaper implied inaccurately that Sandmann had behaved in a menacing or violent way. The Post had quoted the activist, a veteran named Nathan Phillips, who said Sandmann stood in his way to get to the Lincoln Memorial in the Jan 19 incident.

Bertelsman wrote that though Phillips' claim may have been inaccurate, the Post had a right to publish it. The Post couldn't be sued for defamation simply if some of its reporting was inaccurate, he wrote, rather it had to both false and defamatory.

He added that many of the statements that Sandmann alleged were defamatory were not actually about him but about the students as a whole.

Bertelsman also dismissed Sandmann's wider targeting on social media being taken into account.

"And while unfortunate, it is further irrelevant that Sandmann was scorned on social media," Bertelsman wrote.

Was this second round after having lost the first an indication of an incompetent attorney, or a stupid, arrogant little shit and his family who for some reason thought they could win the same kind of case against the same kind of defendants?  I have a feeling they were getting crowd-funded by fellow fascists and it cost them nothing to press another case. And they may have even made money in the bargain.

In case you're still on the fence about whether Nick Sandmann's attorney is competent...

The attorney representing Covington Catholic high school student Nick Sandmann said Thursday that he is also "looking very carefully" at HBO's Bill Maher for making "defamatory" statements against the 16-year-old in January.

We've already got reason to be concerned about this guy's competence right there. Bill Maher is a comedian ffs, which allows him to say a lot of shit about pretty much anyone, as long as it's opinion and jokes.

"Well, certainly CNN and Bill Maher did things that we consider to have crossed the line. We think the statements they made are defamatory. They're not humorous," Wood said. "So certainly Bill Maher is somebody that we're looking at very carefully, and HBO, for allowing him to make those defamatory statements."

Maher says a lot of things that aren't humorous. If that were cause for lawsuits, Maher would be broke and without a show.   Ditto for crossing the line.  Whose line?

Attorney Lin Wood told Fox News that in addition to the Post, his legal team is also looking at other outlets, including CNN and HBO.

"We have not decided who we will sue next. However, we are discussing that and these lawsuits will continue to roll out over the next 30 to 60 days," Wood said.

Scouring the planet for people to sue. That's the mark of a super genious attorney. (Not to mention, he's not going after people who can't afford a lawsuit.) Somebody is aching for attention, or if he really plans to do that, I hope he's prepared to be counter-sued for filing frivolous lawsuits.

Let's see how Bill Maher supposedly defamed little Nick.

On Jan. 27, Maher referred to Sandmann as "a little prick" on his weekly HBO political program "Real Time."

"I don't blame the kid, the smirk-face kid. I blame lead poisoning and bad parenting. And, oh yeah, I blame the f---ing kid, what a little prick," Maher said.

"Smirk face, like that's not a dick move at any age to stick your face in this elderly man," the host continued.

"You know, I don't spend a lot of time, I must tell you, around Catholic school children, but I do not get what Catholic priests see in these kids," Maher said.

Now I have another notice for Mr. Wood aside from the comedian/opinion thing: Even if the things Maher said were not on his show and not for jokes, it's not defamation if it's true.  (Also, Bill Maher knows smirk-face.  He's the poster boy for smirk-face.)

The lawsuit, which calls for The Washington Post to pay $250 million in damages, alleges the paper published "a series of false and defamatory print and online articles" about Sandmann's encounter.

Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos paid $250 million for the newspaper in 2013. The paper said it will mount a vigorous defense against the suit.

Yeah, I don't think that's gonna be hard to do.
