The American Medical Association (AMA) this week recognized racism as a “serious threat to public health,” and adopted new policies aimed at tackling its impact on health care and medical research.

The organization said racism within medical research and health care deliveries has harmed marginalized communities, and poses a barrier to appropriate medical care.

It also supports ending using race as a proxy for biology in medical education, research and clinical practice.

The delegates also adopted measures aimed at ending “racial essentialism,” the idea that belief in a genetic or biological essence defines everyone in a race.

In a related move, the delegates also adopted a policy recognizing police brutality as a “manifestation of structural racism” that disproportionately impacts people of color.

Winning over the medical community

The American Medical Association (AMA) on Friday issued a scathing statement condemning President Trump’s claim that doctors are purposefully inflating coronavirus case numbers, calling the suggestion “malicious, outrageous, and completely misguided.”

Trump, while speaking at a rally in Waterford Township, Mich., on Friday, argued without evidence that doctors are improperly counting coronavirus deaths for monetary gain.

"Our doctors get more money if somebody dies from COVID. You know that, right? I mean our doctors are very smart people. So what they do is they say 'I'm sorry but everybody dies of COVID,'" he said.

Trump argued that other countries put less of an emphasis on COVID-19 as a cause of death compared to the U.S., adding, "with us, when in doubt, 'choose COVID.' It's true."

"In Germany and other places, if you have a heart attack, or if you have cancer, you're terminally ill, you catch COVID, they say you die of cancer, you died of heart attack. With us, when in doubt 'choose COVID.' It's true, no, it's true. Now they'll say 'oh that's terrible what he said,' but that's true. It's like $2,000 more so you get more money," Trump said.

Trump pushed a similar claim during a rally in Wisconsin last weekend, saying "doctors get more money and hospitals get more money" if COVID-19 is listed as a cause of death.

"The suggestion that doctors—in the midst of a public health crisis—are overcounting COVID-19 patients or lying to line their pockets is a malicious, outrageous, and completely misguided charge,” [Susan Bailey, the president of the AMA,] said in a statement Friday without directly naming the president.

Testing the Supremes

The American Medical Association (AMA), the nation’s largest doctors’ group, filed a petition to the Supreme Court Thursday asking it to strike down a rule from the Trump administration barring clinics funded by taxpayers from referring women for abortions.

The petition was also filed in conjunction with the American Civil Liberties Union, Planned Parenthood, the National Family Planning & Reproductive Health Association and and Essential Access Health, which administers the Title X family planning program in California. It comes after two seemingly contradictory rulings from two federal appeals courts on the administration’s restriction.

The petition also tees up an abortion battle that could be heard by the Supreme Court, which is expected to have a more conservative 6-3 majority if the Senate, as expected, confirms Amy Coney Barrett to be a justice for the court.
