Before the California fires, 17 million people were already eligible for legal assistance navigating disaster recovery. Absent the new funding, those services will be largely unavailable.

The move is a victory for property insurers looking to cut costs after major disasters, as homeowners and renters still reeling from some of the worst natural disasters in their lifetimes will be unable to tap the legal resources needed to navigate the thicket of obstacles often thrown up by insurers.

Should Californians have to pay federal taxes?

The Trump administration has rejected California's request for a disaster declaration for six destructive wildfires that burned hundreds of thousands of acres across the state, including a massive central California wildfire that has become the single largest in state history.

"The request for a Major Presidential Disaster Declaration for early September fires has been denied by the federal administration," Brian Ferguson, a spokesperson for the Governor's Office of Emergency Services, confirmed to CNN. The state plans to appeal the decision.

Since the beginning of this fire season, more than 8,500 wildfires have burned well over 4.1 million acres across the state, Cal Fire said in a press release on Thursday. Thirty-one people died as a result of the wildfires and more than 9,200 structures have been destroyed.

The Trump administration's decision falls in line with the President's combative history with the reliably Democratic state.

Sometimes blowback works.  I'd sure like to have been a fly on the wall in the panicked GOP huddle and to know what they said to him to make him back down.  They must have convinced him he might still have a chance to win reelection.

The three states that President Donald Trump has formally declared coronavirus disaster areas have not received the disaster unemployment assistance that they expected to follow that designation.

New York, California and Washington state all requested access to several aid programs provided under a disaster declaration, including disaster unemployment assistance.

Is it a coincidence that all three (blue) states have governors Trump has bad-mouthed?

Remember when people were upset about what he was doing with Ukraine and wondered what he might do if one of the governors of a state he didn't like needed federal assistance?  Now we know.
