Another Trump book coming out soon

President Trump on Friday disputed one of his longtime lawyer’s criticisms of his behavior and questioned whether a forthcoming book by Jay Goldberg runs afoul of lawyer-client privilege.

I'd like to think an attorney would know where that line is, but we're talking about a Trump attorney.

In a telephone interview, Mr. Trump suggested that Mr. Goldberg is unhappy that he wasn’t tapped for a White House role.

Mr. Trump cited economic gains, rising consumer confidence and a strengthening military as proof of a successful tenure and said, “I’ve had nothing but victories, so it’s sad that somebody you can’t take to Washington for obvious reasons wants to write a book.”

He added: “We’re hitting new records every day.”

I can think of one off the top of my head: number of associates striking plea deals and/or in jail. And he breaks that record on a near weekly basis.

Mr. Goldberg represented Mr. Trump in divorce cases involving two ex-wives, Ivana Trump and Marla Maples. His memoir, “The Courtroom Is My Theater,” is due to be released in December.

Mr. Goldberg said through a spokeswoman that “Jay is very cognizant of [the privilege] issue,” adding, “the book will definitely not reveal anything that will violate attorney-client privilege.” The spokeswoman said Mr. Goldberg “never wanted to go to Washington.”

In an interview at his Manhattan home, whose entryway is decorated with a framed collection of appreciative notes from Mr. Trump, Mr. Goldberg said the president’s private legal team has done him a disservice by alternately praising and condemning Michael Cohen, who has implicated Mr. Trump in campaign-finance violations related to hush money payments to two women.

He also said that Mr. Trump sustained attacks from political foes and the press have left the president “punch-drunk,” causing him to lash out without “appropriate restraint.”

Later, Mr. Goldberg said through the spokeswoman that he didn’t mean that Mr. Trump was punch-drunk. Rather, he said that he would be punch-drunk if he had to endure the attacks that Mr. Trump has seen as president.

Sounds like it's going to be more pro-Trump than tell-all.

“There’s so much pounding against him from all different directions, he says things that if he had chance to reflect he wouldn’t say,” Mr. Goldberg said.

Yeah, well, that's the thing about Trump, isn't it? He never reflects. It's not that he doesn't have a chance to.

Later, Mr. Goldberg said through the spokeswoman that he didn’t mean that Mr. Trump was punch-drunk. Rather, he said that he would be punch-drunk if he had to endure the attacks that Mr. Trump has seen as president.

And maybe that's what he's doing by acting like it will have some juicy stuff in it, but in fact it will be praising or excusing Trump.

Mr. Goldberg said he would vote to re-elect Mr. Trump.

Sure. No point wasting your money on that book.

Jay Goldberg calls out Trump

Jay Goldberg, a friend and former attorney for President Trump [...] was asked on CNN's "Cuomo Prime Time" about the president's changing explanations regarding whether he knew of hush-money payments to two women who allege they had an affair with Trump more than a decade ago.

"The question is, should he be punished for the falsehood that he said, for example, on the plane?" Goldberg said, referencing Trump's original claim he was not aware of a $130,000 payment to adult-film star Stormy Daniels.

"The answer is it wasn't under oath. It wasn't given to an FBI agent. It's not punishable," Goldberg continued. "It's wrong, but it's not punishable. It has to be under oath or it has to be given to an agent of the government."

Trump previously told reporters aboard Air Force One he was unaware of the [Stormy Daniels hush] payments, but later admitted to reimbursing Cohen. On Wednesday, he told Fox News he found out about the payments "later on."

"That should concern the public, that the president can't be counted on to tell the truth," Goldberg said. "I mean, I’m a good friend of the president, and I don't condone lying to the public. That I’ll agree with."

It does concern many of us.  Just not the ones who can do anything about it.

Warning: Cohen is a louse

Talk about stating the obvious.

Jay Goldberg told the Wall Street Journal and CNN that Trump called him on Friday seeking advice and he cautioned him against trusting Cohen. He even warned Trump in their 15 minute conversation that Cohen could even agree to wear a wire.

“Michael will never stand up (for you)” if he’s charged, Goldberg told the WSJ, recalling what he told Trump last week. He said he told Trump to “be alert” no matter what Cohen tells him.

That wire business? It may be too late for that warning.

Goldberg represented Trump during the 1990s and early 2000 on real estate matters and his divorces from Ivanka Trump and Marla Maples and told CNN that he advised the President based on his own experience as a prosecutor.

“Anybody who is facing 30 years never stands up,” he told CNN. “Without exception, a person facing a prison term cooperates.”

Except if the alternative is being whacked. Ask Manafort.

While Cohen has not been charged with any crimes, he is reportedly known for recording business and personal conversations as collateral. Many people within Trump’s inner circle are concerned about whether the recordings were seized and what they might entail and have told the media in recent days that they think Cohen will likely flip on Trump.

Oh, those recordings were seized, all right. The only question is whether they will come under the heading of attorney-client privilege.

So we know Cohen is a sleaze. We've known that for a while. So has Trump. That used to be a plus for him.

What's the latest development with Cohen?

Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump’s longtime personal attorney, on Wednesday dropped his defamation lawsuits against BuzzFeed News and Fusion GPS, apparently due to the federal criminal investigation he now faces.

“The decision to voluntarily discontinue these cases was a difficult one,” Cohen’s attorney David Schwartz told Politico in a statement Thursday morning. “We believe the defendants defamed my client, and vindicating Mr. Cohen’s rights was — and still remains — important. But given the events that have unfolded, and the time, attention, and resources needed to prosecute these matters, we have dismissed the matters, despite their merits.”

Not to mention, he's bound to lose any case that involves his character.

Cohen filed lawsuits against BuzzFeed News and Fusion GPS in January over the publication of the dossier compiled by former British spy Christopher Steele. The dossier alleged that Cohen met with Kremlin officials, a claim he has denied.

Which brings us to the first reason he dropped the cases: The Steele dossier is proving to be completely true. Apparently, Mr. Mueller has proof that Cohen lied about going to Prague.

In a Thursday morning statement, Buzzfeed News said that Cohen’s decision to drop the lawsuit shows that Cohen “no longer thinks an attack on the free press is worth his time.”

Way down the list of reasons.
