The Department of Transportation announced more than $6 billion in grant funding for high-speed rail projects this week. The money comes amid ongoing support for a technology that has also encountered concerns about its costs.

Brightline West, an affiliate of Florida’s Brightline intercity rail service, was awarded $3 billion in federal funds for its proposed line between Las Vegas and Los Angeles, which would zoom passengers between the cities in two hours.

Did casino owners match funds? I mean, why was Las Vegas the first place to get to? Because, I don't think it was a pressing matter to get people from Las Vegas to Los Angeles, so it must be to get people to Las Vegas.

The California High-Speed-Rail Authority was awarded $3.1 billion to continue work on its system, which will ultimately connect Los Angeles and San Francisco in less than three hours.

Since they should actually be in two different states, but that's another story.

Architect Adam Paul Susaneck recently designed a hypothetical high-speed rail route that made the rounds online, connecting Boston, Philadelphia, New York City, Washington, D.C., Toronto and Montreal.

Now that seems more urgent than a trek to Las Vegas.

Kansas City may get free bus transportation

The Kansas City [Missouri] Council has voted Thursday to make bus fare free within city limits starting next year.

The council unanimously approved what’s known as the “Zero Fare Transit” proposal.

At $1.50 per ticket, or a $50 monthly pass, eliminating all bus fares in Kansas City is expected to cost $8 million a year.

If the city can work out the finances, Kansas City would become the first major metro in the nation to offer free bus service.

Proponents call free transit a difference-maker for the economy by getting workers to their jobs. They argue it’s also a lifesaver for citizens, getting people to doctors and grocery stores for trips they may otherwise skip.

The free fare change comes at time when the bus service is redesigning its system, including new technology that has the ability for buses to change red lights to green to move people faster.
