The GMO Question

Seedy Business,” (PDF), a report released earlier this year by U.S. Right To Know, a non-profit organization that counters food industry disinformation, is an eye-opener. It’s introduction opens with this:

“Since 2012, the agrichemical and food industries have mounted a complex, multifaceted public relations, advertising, lobbying and political campaign in the United States, costing more than $100 million, to defend genetically engineered food and crops and the pesticides that accompany them.” The report lists 15 things that “big food is hiding with its slick PR campaign on GMOs.” Maybe the most controversial of these: “GMO science is for sale.” Others can be used to counter your well-meaning friends who’ve heard the media say that the FDA has determined these foods are safe: The FDA does not test whether GMOs are safe. It merely reviews information submitted by the agrichemical companies.

There is no consensus in the science. A comprehensive review of peer-reviewed GMO animal feeding studies found roughly an equal number of research groups raising concerns about genetically engineered foods and those suggesting GMOs were as safe and nutritious as conventional foods. The review also found that most studies finding GMOs foods the same as conventional foods were performed by biotechnology companies or their associates.

There are no epidemiological studies investigating potential health effects of GMO food on human health. With no epidemiological studies, claims that “trillions of GMO meals” have been eaten with no ill effects have no scientific basis. Without such studies, which have been used to determine the effects of factors from fats to smoking, it is not possible to know whether GMOs are causing harm such as increases in known diseases, especially over the long term.

GMO studies are frequently mischaracterized as showing safety. For example, the EU Research Project, which has been internationally cited as providing evidence of GMO safety, was not designed to test safety and provides no reliable evidence of safety. Another example is the false claim that “hundreds of studies” listed on the biotechnology website Biofortified demonstrate GMO safety; in fact, many of the studies on that list do not address safety concerns at all, and several of the studies raise serious concerns.

International agreements show widespread recognition of risks posed by GMO foods and crops. The Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety and UN’s Codex Alimentarius share a precautionary approach to GMO crops and foods, in that they agree that genetic engineering differs from conventional breeding and that safety assessments should be required before GM organisms are used in food or released into the environment.

Claims that government and scientific organizations endorse safety are often exaggerated or inaccurate. For example, an expert panel of the Royal Society of Canada said it is “scientifically unjustifiable” to presume that GM foods are safe without rigorous scientific testing. A report by the British Medical Association concluded that “many unanswered questions remain” about the long-term effects of GMOs on human health and the environment, and that “safety concerns cannot, as yet, be dismissed completely on the basis of information currently available.” Moreoever, the positions of some prominent scientific organizations have been misrepresented or opposed by members, further highlighting the lack of consensus among scientists.

My own objection to GMO food is not so much that it is unsafe to eat. I don’t know that it is or isn’t. Long-term studies have not yet been possible. My objection encompasses that fact and the economics.

We know from many instances of attempts to thwart nature to our advantage, such as importing exotic plants and animals for pest control, and from accidental importation of pests, that introducing a foreign actor into an ecosystem whose components have evolved together for millennia disrupts the system and produces unforeseen and often disastrous results. (Kudzu in Missouri anyone?) What happens next is a rash of chemical attempts to rebalance. The winners in this game are the chemical companies, not the consumers. The consumers MAY not be any less healthy for eating GMO foods, but their wallets are certainly lighter, and their ecosystem full of chemicals that may be harmful to them directly and impossible to predict for the future.

If we need more food and can’t get it without GMOs (which I am not stipulating), why not just manufacture chemical food and leave the environment to take care of itself as it has done since the beginning of time?

Down on the Farm

China’s rejection of shipments of US corn containing traces of unapproved genetically modified maize has caused a significant drop in exports. According to a new report, US traders have lost $427 million in sales.

Overall, China has barred nearly 1.45 million tons of corn shipments since last year.

US corn exports to China since January are down 85 percent from the same period last year, the report says.

China has so far approved 15 genetically modified corn strains for import.

Genetically modified corn, which produces anti-pest toxin, is no longer as efficient at killing the bugs. The resistance arose quickly [...] in Iowa, it showed up after an average of 3.6 years [...] , due to some extent, to farmers avoiding the simple, but profit-cutting precaution of crop rotation.

However, crop rotation would have meant the resistance developed a little less quickly.
[Western corn rootworm] has developed resistance to two of three types of Bt toxins currently available on the market.
Not to worry, Monsanto has more, I’m sure.
The lab tests performed by Gassmann and his team have revealed that a case of cross-resistance is in place as the pests that had become resistant to Cry3Bb1 were also resistant to mCry3A.
Ooops. Cross-resistance.

And what about the battle against weeds? Of course you know that Monsanto – manufacturer of Roundup (glyphosate) herbicide also genetically modified crops to be glyphosate-tolerant, permitting them to sell lots and lots of Roundup.
Around 93 percent of all soybean crops planted in the US last year involved GMO, herbicide-tolerant (HT) variants, the USDA acknowledged, and HT corn and HT cotton constituted about 85 and 82 percent of total acreage, respectively.

“Because glyphosate is significantly less toxic and less persistent than traditional herbicides,” a portion of the [USDA] report reads, “…the net impact of HT crop adoption is an improvement in environmental quality and a reduction in the health risks associated with herbicide use (even if there are slight increases in the total pounds of herbicide applied). However, glyphosate resistance among weed populations in recent years may have induced farmers to raise application rates .Thus, weed resistance may be offsetting some of the economic and environmental advantages of HT crop adoption regarding herbicide use. Moreover, herbicide toxicity may soon be negatively affected (compared to glyphosate) by the introduction (estimated for 2014) of crops tolerant to the herbicides dicamba and 2,4-D.”

New Report on Bt Crops

GMO-related damage was linked to five different areas: Intestinal permeability, imbalanced gut bacteria, immune activation and allergic response, impaired digestion, and damage to the intestinal wall.

The IRT release also indicated that glyphosate, a weed killer sold under the brand name ‘Roundup’ was also found to have a negative effect on intestinal bacteria. GMO crops contain high levels of the toxin at harvest.

In soy, corn, cotton (oil), canola (oil), sugar from sugar beets, zucchini, yellow squash, Hawaiian papaya, and alfalfa, “Bt-toxin, glyphosate, and other components of GMOs, are linked to five conditions that may either initiate or exacerbate gluten-related disorders,” according to Smith. It’s the BT-toxin in genetically modified foods which kills insects by “puncturing holes in their cells.” The toxin is present in ‘every kernel’ of Bt-corn and survives human digestion, with a 2012 study confirming that it punctures holes in human cells as well.

Well, of course it does. Bt works by a physical action, not a chemical one. Who the hell thought it wouldn’t? You can spray the surface of the corn plant, without spraying the edible kernels, and kill the pests. You don’t need to create a monster corn plant that has Bt embedded in it.

Europe wouldn’t allow Bt corn for years, until Monsanto finally got its way in France early this year.
France's highest court lifted the country's ban on growing Monsanto's genetically modified (GMO) maize MON810, yesterday (1 August), following a decision by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) in May that said the ban was not justified by a serious environmental threat.

The court found that the French ban violated European Union law because the maize was authorised by the EU in 1998.

Eight member states have banned the cultivation of MON810 – France, Germany, Poland, Italy, Luxemburg, Austria, Hungary and Greece.

Last week it emerged that Monsanto will no longer pursue cultivation approvals for new GMO crops in Europe because of the regulatory uncertainty. They will instead focus on enabling imports of GMO crops into the EU.

But China won’t take it.
China has blocked a fifth cargo of US corn since mid-November after testing found a strain of genetically-modified (GMO) corn not yet approved for import.

China, the world’s second largest corn consumer, has refused 180,000 tons of [US] grain since mid-November. Observers believe it has less to do with the corn and more to do with other trade quarrels between the two countries.

Do They Think They Live in a Democracy Or Something?

Late last month, advocates in Colorado filed the preliminary paperwork necessary to land a GMO labeling bill on the ballot in 2014. If voters there agree to mandate appropriate labels on lab-made food products, Colorado will join Connecticut and Maine as being the only locales within the United States to approve such efforts

[However, the labeling laws in Connecticut and Maine] might not officially end up on the books anytime soon — if at all — according to Maxx Chatsko at The Motley Fool. As he noted in a report last week, that legislation requires that four other northeastern states with a combined population of at least 20 million enact similar laws first in order for the already-passed measures to be enforced.

A poll conducted by the New York Times this year found that 93 percent of respondents want GMO ingredients to be properly labeled, and a similar survey done by the Washington Post in 2010 clocked in with 94 percent support.

And Good Luck to You

Public advocacy groups and farmers have joined forces to challenge biotech giant Monsanto’s claims on genetically engineered seed patents, and to halt the company’s aggressive lawsuits against anyone whose fields are contaminated by their GMOs.

Seventy-three US farmers, seed companies, and public advocacy groups appealed their case against Monsanto Co. to the Supreme Court on Thursday.

Do YOU Want to Know What You're Eating?

Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-OR) on Wednesday introduced legislation that would require labeling for all genetically engineered foods.

The Genetically Engineered Food Right-to-Know Act (PDF) would require any food that contains genetically engineered ingredients be labeled accordingly by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. If approved by Congress and signed into law, the United States would join more than 60 countries that require food labels to disclose genetically engineered ingredients.

Prepare to Mutate

The biotech rider instead was introduced anonymously as the larger bill progressed - little wonder food activists are accusing lobbyists and Congress members of backroom dealings. The Food Democracy Now and the Center for Food are directing blame at the Senate Appropriations Committee and its chairman, Sen. Barbara Mikulski, D-Md. According to reports, many members of Congress were apparently unaware that the "Monsanto Protection Act" even existed within the spending bill, HR 933; they voted in order to avert a government shutdown.
I assure you. In some boardroom somewhere, three guys are slapping high-fives while two other guys cut campaign checks. It turns out those Enron dudes were pikers. This is the real stuff right here.

And Who Is Surprised By This?

Last fall, the Environmental Protection Agency warned that Monsanto’s Bt corn, which was genetically engineered a decade ago to ward off rootworms, is now falling prey to worms that have developed resistance to the plants’ built-in insecticide. The EPA also expressed concern that Monsanto’s monitoring was “inadequate and likely to miss early resistance events.”

At the time, a company spokesperson denied there was a problem, telling Bloomberg News, “Monsanto continues to believe there’s no scientific confirmation of resistance to its Bt corn.”

However, this year’s corn-growing season is now well under way in the United States, and in some places the crops are suffering severe damage. Scientists have identitied the culprit as Bt-resistant rootworms.

Any self-respecting scientist or student of biology could have predicted this (and did). The only reason Monsanto was able to push this technology on the world is the big money they spend on lobbying Congress members who not only have no self-respect, they have no shame, and no conscience.
The resistant rootworms have also appeared in South Africa, India, and China, but they may have the greatest impact in the United States, where more than half the corn grown is Bt.

In addition, American taxpayers could find themselves picking up the tab for any crop failures, thanks to government subsidies.
There's no “could” to that. It's guaranteed. And the price you pay for corn products will go up as you pay a premium to the growers who have been storing corn, waiting for the right time – like now, pull it out of their grain bins and put it on the market.
