Mark your calendar - June 14

The idea is to show off the great mass of Americans who oppose Trump and his policies, but not to give him a confrontation that the White House might use to its advantage, and also not to appear that demonstrators have any quarrel with the rank-and-file soldiers who’ll be marching that day.

[...]

[G]etting permits to protest in D.C. under Trump have become a hassle, adding that the No Kings organizers are “highly committed to nonviolence and there is concern that there would be likely repression and potential escalation if they organized in D.C.”

[...]

There’s certainly a legitimate concern that if tens of thousands showed up in Washington to protest Trump’s parade, that would make the president’s birthday look like the big deal he wants it to be.

Nah. But, the soldiers argument is a good one. And it probably would be impossible to get a permit at that time anyway. (That is to say, if you want to do it lawfully.) The other reason I've heard for why there will be no protest in DC that seems legit to me is that the police would be overwhelmed trying to handle both.  And I'm not sure that's a good reason, either.  Unless it means they'd call out the more brutal federal masked and heavily armed agents, provoking riots and injuries.

On the other hand, there's also the argument that the media spotlights conflict, so if you want widespread coverage, conflict gets it.
There’s something to this. America only passed a Voting Rights Act in 1965 after the clubbings of Selma’s “Bloody Sunday” were televised to a shocked nation.

[...]

There’s zero doubt that [Leah] Greenberg, her husband and Indivisible co-founder Ezra Levin, the members of Indivisible, and the other groups who’ve thrown themselves into Hands Off!, No Kings and other coast-to-coast protests have done a invaluable public service. They’ve shown the world that millions of Americans oppose Trump and will stand up for democracy.

But I can’t help thinking about what Frederick Douglass told an audience in upstate New York in 1857, when things still looked bleak for the anti-slavery movement in America.

“Power concedes nothing without a demand,” the formerly enslaved Douglass said. “It never did and it never will. Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them, and these will continue till they are resisted with either words or blows, or with both. The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress.”

Citizens in action in Minneapolis

Also in San Diego.

UPDATE 06/04/2025:

[W]hen people who live near Bloomington Avenue and East Lake Street noticed federal agents gathering near Las Cuatro Milpas restaurant.

They quickly called for people to show up, and they did.

[...]

The crowd grew within minutes, as did their calls for members of the Minneapolis Police Department and the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office on scene to leave.

The crowd moved whatever they could in the path of officers and deputies as they escorted federal agents down Lake Street. Some threw garbage cans, and some even threw tires. WCCO's crew at the scene saw pop bottles and bricks hurled at law enforcement and some responded with force.

[...]

"This incident was related to a criminal search warrant for drugs and money laundering," [Mayor Jacob] Frey said.

Frey said the police department's only role was helping with crowd control and keeping the community safe. No arrests were made.

[...]

The sheriff's office says its partnership with federal officials includes "execution of multiple search warrants at multiple locations in the metro area."

"This incident was not related to any immigration enforcement. HCSO has no involvement in civil immigration. HCSO enforces criminal statutes and works on criminal investigations. We work with federal partners regularly on those criminal investigations," the sheriff's office said in a statement.

Police said on social media they didn't have "advance notice" of the federal operation, and "any claims to the contrary are false."

[...]

"The amount of presence they showed today on Lake Street, it was a show of power," Luis Arguenta, with Unidos Minnesota, an immigrant advocacy group.

Arguenta said that he wished "more information had flowed a little freely this morning, even from some of the agents that were on the ground."

Awesome citizen action

"Shame!"

Hopefully ICE doesn't return with more agents.  But I expect they will be trying to identify the citizens in the video to arrest for interfering.
Stephen Miller summoned 50 senior ICE officials from around the country for a bonkers emergency meeting about deportation numbers, according to a new report from the conservative Washington Examiner. One official after the meeting: “They’ve been threatened, told they’re watching their emails and texts and Signals. That’s what is horrible about things right now. It’s a fearful environment. Everybody in leadership is afraid. There’s no morale. Everybody is demoralized.”

“Miller came in there and eviscerated everyone. ‘You guys aren’t doing a good job. You’re horrible leaders.’ He just ripped into everybody. He had nothing positive to say about anybody, shot morale down. Stephen Miller wants everybody arrested. ‘Why aren’t you at Home Depot? Why aren’t you at 7-Eleven?'”

I'm gonna say this could backfire.
One official stood up and told Miller that DHS and the WH said they were only supposed to be focused on migrants who had criminal records: “Miller said, ‘What do you mean you’re only going after criminals?’ Miller got into a little bit of a pissing contest. ‘That’s what Tom Homan says every time he’s on TV: ‘We’re going after criminals,'” the ICE official told Miller.”

Apparently what they say to the public is not the same as what they are saying internally to senior ICE officials.

UPDATE 06:50 pm:

Also in Minneapolis.  In the rain.
