Protest in your home

You can't do it on the streets.
Several dozen demonstrators sat in a downtown Jefferson City [Missouri's capital] street and refused to leave Monday as part of Poor People’s Campaign protests across the country, including in neighboring Kansas.

Bridgett Hughes came from Kansas City, where she works in fast food, to send a message to Missouri legislators. She said laws banning mandatory union fees and restricting cities from raising their own minimum wages that came out of Jefferson City were two pieces of legislation she opposed. Hughes also said she was driven to oppose racism and United States militarism, and to promote economic justice.

Other peaceful protesters sat near the state Capitol, chanting and singing protest songs as police pulled aside small groups to write citations.

Jefferson City Police Capt. Robert Clark said 88 people were issued summonses for obstructing a lawful police order to move. He said that’s a misdemeanor charge.

Clark said a summons is technically an arrest, but no one was taken to the police station or jail.

Protesters said they plan to come back to the capital every Monday through June 28 to continue to push their message.
