Greg Palast wrote a detailed assessment of how voting machines are exploited in The Best Democracy Money Can Buy, his investigation into the 2000 election (now a documentary film). If you want more, just Google "voting machine tampering," and if you don't remember it, this should have been bigger news back then: Eugene Curtis testified that Congressman Tom Feeney paid him to create a program to "flip" electronic votes for the 2000 election.
Now, here's Charlie Pierce and New Scientist on the still problematic machinery for voting. Why are we still using them? I can make guesses.
...but hey, do what you want...you will anyway.
