At least three state police officers were armed with long guns as lines of protesters stood on either side. One protester who was sitting in the roadway was carried away and arrested. Additionally, at least one more arrest has been made.“Are you proud of yourself?” One protester asked a state trooper. “No, I’m not,” the state trooper responded as he moved two shouting protesters off of the roadway. Troopers were there, it seems, to build a barricade, which I assume was part of an effort to stop protesters being attacked by ICE, because, although Kristi Noem herself was spotted on the roof of the building (expect promo photos), ICE did not shoot at the protesters like they have been doing. Of course, that could be because Noem was there getting photos. The troopers did arrest people. I'm looking for an explanation for their presence, but indications are it's to protect the protesters' first amendment rights. Hopefully this prevents escalation of the violent interactions between ICE and protesters, instigated by ICE firing pepper bombs and tear gas.
UPDATE 10/10/2025:
I was wrong. They're cooperating with DHS.
Or was I...
