It Must Be Campaign Season

All right. Let's get through this Obama-now-supports-gay-marriage thing and move on. He's a man who urges us to look forward not back. So, here's all you get from me:

His polls must really be dropping.
“President Obama remains a maker of history,” [MSNBC host Chris Matthews] said. “He was the first African American to serve as our President and now he is the leader of another kind: the first President to state his support for recognizing the marriage of partners of the same sex.”

[...]

“I have to wonder how long [gay men and women who now work for the election of Republican members of Congress, Senators and Romney himself ] can remain indentured servants, how long they can continue to accept the Republican Party’s don’t ask, don’t tell rule that you can work here as long as you keep your mouth shut.”

  Raw Story
NBC host Jay Leno on Tuesday told former Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum that he was “wrong” to oppose marriage equality for LGBT Americans.

“I know you oppose gay marriage,” Leno said during his interview with Santorum. “I’m not going to change your mind on that even though I think you’re wrong. But that’s OK.”

[...]

“I think most of the people in political life oppose gay marriage,” Santorum said with a grin. “At least, they say they do.”

“They say they do,” Leno agreed. “I think you really do.”

[...]
Leno argued. “If a child is up for adoption, are you for gay adoption? If a gay couple wants to adopt a child, are you OK with that?”
“I’m not,” the former Pennsylvania senator declared. “Because children need moms and dads.” “But is an orphanage better?” Leno wondered.

“No, I would say that it’s not,” Santorum admitted.

And now I'm trying to think of third alternative that doesn't require an untimely end to their little lives.
The Log Cabin Republicans, a group dedicated to representing LGBT Republicans, on Wednesday derided President Barack Obama’s endorsement of same sex marriage.

  Raw Story
I hope that group provides free psychiatric care for its members, because if they're not the most conflicted people in the world, they are surely in the running.
“Log Cabin Republicans appreciate that President Obama has finally come in line with leaders like Vice President Dick Cheney on this issue, but LGBT Americans are right to be angry that this calculated announcement comes too late to be of any use to the people of North Carolina, or any of the other states that have addressed this issue on his watch,” Cooper added.

“This administration has manipulated LGBT families for political gain as much as anybody, and after his campaign’s ridiculous contortions to deny support for marriage equality this week he does not deserve praise for an announcement that comes a day late and a dollar short.”
Well, okay. I can agree with that. But it wouldn't have helped in North Carolina if he'd said it last week.
I should note that Obama doesn't support federal legislation for same-sex marriage, but believes it's a "states rights" issue. So, maybe in 100 years from now, same sex partners will be protected by a Constitutional amendment to marry.

Don't hold your breath.
