More evidence of Trump's direct interference in 2020

Donald Trump made a phone call in November 2020 in which he put pressure on two Republican election officers in Michigan not to sign the official document from the state confirming that Joe Biden had won the presidential election there, according to an exclusive report by The Detroit News late on Thursday.

Trump told them on the phone call obtained and reported by the Detroit News that: “We’ve got to fight for our country. We can’t let these people take our country away from us.”

McDaniel is from Michigan and was also reportedly on the call and told the two board members: “If you can go home tonight, do not sign it,” adding “We will get you attorneys.”

Trump then added: “We’ll take care of that.”

On Thursday Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung issued a statement saying that Trump’s call was “taken in furtherance of his duty as president of the United States to faithfully take care of the laws and ensure election integrity, including investigating the rigged and stolen 2020 presidential election”.

We all know he was furthering his attempt - as a candidate - to wrest the election from the people. Unfortunately, the Supreme Court could rule otherwise, and give him a pass on his attempts. And we shouldn't be surprised if they do.

Palmer and Hartmann’s refusal to sign the certification and a failed attempt to withdraw their votes from the day before in which they confirmed Biden’s victory in the county did not impede Biden’s win in Michigan.

Surely there's a criminal case here for Michigan's AG.

Pardons that make sense

Joe Biden is pardoning thousands of people who were convicted of use and simple possession of marijuana on federal lands and in the District of Columbia, the White House said Friday – his latest round of executive clemencies meant to rectify racial disparities in the justice system.

The US president is also granting clemency to 11 people serving what the White House called “disproportionately long” sentences for nonviolent drug offenses.

“Criminal records for marijuana use and possession have imposed needless barriers to employment, housing, and educational opportunities,” Biden said. “Too many lives have been upended because of our failed approach to marijuana. It’s time that we right these wrongs.”

[N]o federal prisoners are eligible for release as a result of Friday’s action [...] but the pardons were meant to help thousands overcome obstacles to renting a home or finding a job.

Maybe some blue states at least will follow suit.

Biden’s order applies only to marijuana, which has been decriminalized or legalized in many states for some or all uses, but remains a controlled substance under federal law.

US regulators are studying reclassifying the drug from the category of drugs deemed to have “no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse”, known as “schedule I”, to the less tightly regulated “schedule III”.

Now he's going to have to argue that his properties aren't worth what he said they are.  He's gotten himself into some real legal binds.  In the Colorado case, he wants to argue for a speedy resolution so he can be on the 2024 ballot, and in the other cases, he wants to delay trials indefinitely so he can be on the 2024 ballot.

A federal appeals court on Wednesday issued a new, unredacted version of its decision upholding the partial gag order in the Washington, D.C.-election subversion case against Donald Trump, revealing security concerns by state and local officials.

A three-judge panel of the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals on Dec. 8 issued the ruling in a 68-page order on Dec. 8, but with certain information redacted, or blacked out, on three of its pages.

The material which was redacted, and is now public, mostly pertains to descriptions of security concerns from public officials who had been targeted by Trump or his supporters.

In the 24 hours since the Colorado Supreme Court kicked former President Donald Trump off the state's Republican primary ballot, social media outlets have been flooded with threats against the justices who ruled in the case.

Advance Democracy, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that conducts public interest research, identified "significant violent rhetoric" against the justices and Democrats, often in direct response to Trump's posts about the ruling on his platform Truth Social. They found that some social media users posted justices' email addresses, phone numbers and office building addresses.

"This ends when we kill these f--kers," a user wrote on a pro-Trump forum that was used by several Jan. 6 rioters.

[...] A federal appeals court pointed out the pattern when it upheld a narrowed gag order against Trump in his election interference case this month, noting that those he publicly targets are often threatened and harassed.

Political leaders on both sides of the political aisle need to speak out against these calls for violence, and social media platforms need to reassess their role in hosting and promoting this rhetoric.”
