Meh

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein on Tuesday appeared to shrug off the news that House Republicans have drafted articles of impeachment against him, the latest sign of escalating efforts among conservatives to oust the top Justice Department official overseeing special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation.

"They can't even resist leaking their own drafts," Rosenstein quipped during a moderated discussion at the Newseum to commemorate Law Day.

[...]

Rosenstein said the standards the Department of Justice (DOJ) follows for making charges against someone are far different than how the drafters approached making allegations in this document — leaked and unsigned.

"The way we operate in the Department of Justice, if we are going to accuse someone of wrongdoing, we have to have admissible evidence, and credible witnesses, we need to be prepared to prove our case in court. And we have to fix our signature to the charging document, and that is something that not everybody appreciates," Rosenstein told the audience.

"I just don't have anything to say about documents like that that nobody has the courage to put their name on and they leak in that way," he continued.

"There have been people who have been making threats privately and publicly against me for quite some time, and I think they should understand by now the Department of Justice is not going to be extorted," Rosenstein continued.

They'll keep trying, though.

About time, Missouri

The Missouri state House passed a bill Tuesday to legalize medical marijuana, according to the The Associated Press.

The measure allows anyone over the age of 18 with a terminal illness to use smokeless medical marijuana. Those who suffer from cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and post-traumatic stress disorder, among other conditions, would also be able to use the substance.

The bill passed the GOP-controlled chamber 112-44 and now heads to the Republican-held state Senate.

Oh, no!

Sanders came without makeup today!

Did nobody ask her where her smokey eyes were?

Also:  no pearls!  And, are those shoulder pads from the 80s, or are her shoulders actually that big?  I bet it's the latter.

Kelly will be leaving soon

White House chief of staff John Kelly has eroded morale in the West Wing in recent months with comments to aides that include insulting the president's intelligence and casting himself as the savior of the country, according to eight current and former White House officials.

The officials said Kelly portrays himself to Trump administration aides as the lone bulwark against catastrophe, curbing the erratic urges of a president who has a questionable grasp on policy issues and the functions of government. He has referred to Trump as "an idiot" multiple times to underscore his point, according to four officials who say they've witnessed the comments.

[...]

Presidential historian Michael Beschloss said Kelly's comments about Trump, when compared to previous White House chiefs of staff, "suggest a lack of respect for the sitting president of a kind that we haven't seen before."

  NBC
Have we forgotten Rex Tillerson so soon?
Current and former White House officials said Kelly has at times made remarks that have rattled female staffers. Kelly has told aides multiple times that women are more emotional than men, including at least once in front of the president, four current and former officials said.
Has he met the president? Or Sarah Sanders?
In one heated exchange between the two men before February's Winter Olympics in South Korea, Kelly strongly — and successfully — dissuaded Trump from ordering the withdrawal of all U.S. troops from the Korean Peninsula, according to two officials.

For Kelly, the exchange underscored the reasoning behind one of his common refrains, which multiple officials described as some version of "I'm the one saving the country."

"The strong implication being 'if I weren't here we would've entered WWIII or the president would have been impeached,'" one former senior White House official said.
That'll get him in more trouble than calling the idiot an idiot.
Kelly has made similar comments to lawmakers, at times making fun of what he sees as Trump's lack of knowledge about policy and government, current and former officials said.

He's been particularly cutting when it comes to immigration issues, which he considers one of his policy strong suits, having served as Homeland Security secretary and head of the combatant command for U.S. military operations in Central America and South America, the officials said.

[...]

"He doesn't even understand what DACA is. He's an idiot," Kelly said in one meeting, according to two officials who were present. "We've got to save him from himself."
Don't bother. It can't be done, and he's not worth the effort.
One person who has known and worked with Kelly over the years said he uses "coarse language" when he is in what he believes to be trusted company.
Kelly is himself an idiot if he thinks there's any trusted company to be had in the White House.
The private manner aides describe may shed new light on why Kelly now finds himself — just nine months into the job — grappling with diminished influence and a drumbeat of questions about how long he'll remain at the White House.

"He says stuff you can't believe," said one senior White House official. "He'll say it and you think, 'That is not what you should be saying.'"

[...]

"I spend more time with the president than anyone else and we have an incredibly candid and strong relationship," said Kelly in a statement. "He always knows where I stand and he and I both know this story is total BS. I am committed to the president, his agenda, and our country. This is another pathetic attempt to smear people close to President Trump and distract from the administration’s many successes."
That will only work for a while, moron.

You know, it's quite possible Kelly is hoping to be fired.

Worry about him no longer

That throw was one of the highlights of my political awareness life.  It could have only been better if he had hit his target.  By the way, he didn't throw "a" shoe.  He threw both.

It's still good.

Border Patrol Agents have cost a bundle in lawsuits against them

The US government has paid out more than $60m in legal settlements where border agents were involved in deaths, driving injuries, alleged assaults and wrongful detention, an analysis of more than a decade of official data reveals.

[...]

All told over the 12-year period studied, the treasury department cut a check to settle a claim against CBP every 32 hours on average, for a grand total of more than $177m, when $116m in claims related to employment or property are taken into account.

However, while the data studied by the Guardian is extensive, it still does not give a full picture of all settlements. Provided by the US treasury department, the data only represents payments made from the federal government’s Judgement Fund, which pays out when an agency does not have funds available to compensate a claim for damages.

  the Guardian
I wonder what the breakdown is per year, since Trump has telegraphed that law enforcement agents should stop being careful in their treatment of suspects.

Imagine how many incidents there are that never get reported.
The agency’s Use of Force Review Board has investigated 30 significant incidents since June 2015. Each of its 17 reports made public have considered the use of force compliant with agency policy.
Well, there's a surprise.

Leaked: Mueller's questions to Trump

And you know they were leaked by the Trump team.  In hopes to somehow make Mueller's investigation harder.
They deal chiefly with the president’s high-profile firings of the F.B.I. director and his first national security adviser, his treatment of Attorney General Jeff Sessions and a 2016 Trump Tower meeting between campaign officials and Russians offering dirt on Hillary Clinton.

But they also touch on the president’s businesses; any discussions with his longtime personal lawyer, Michael D. Cohen, about a Moscow real estate deal; whether the president knew of any attempt by Mr. Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, to set up a back channel to Russia during the transition; any contacts he had with Roger J. Stone Jr., a longtime adviser who claimed to have inside information about Democratic email hackings; and what happened during Mr. Trump’s 2013 trip to Moscow for the Miss Universe pageant.

[...]

Mr. Mueller would like to ask Mr. Trump whether he had any discussions during the campaign about any meetings with President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia and whether he spoke to others about either American sanctions against Russia or meeting with Mr. Putin.

Through his questions, Mr. Mueller also tries to tease out Mr. Trump’s views on law enforcement officials and whether he sees them as independent investigators or people who should loyally protect him.

[...]

He wants to ask why, time and again, Mr. Trump expressed no concerns with whether Mr. Comey had abided by policy.

[...]

Many of the questions surround Mr. Trump’s relationship with Mr. Sessions, including the attorney general’s decision to recuse himself from the Russia investigation and whether Mr. Trump told Mr. Sessions he needed him in place for protection.

Mr. Mueller appears to be investigating how Mr. Trump took steps last year to fire Mr. Mueller himself. The president relented after the White House counsel, Donald F. McGahn II, threatened to resign, an episode that the special counsel wants to ask about.

  NYT
Nothing surprising.
[Trump's] lawyers have been negotiating terms of an interview out of concern that their client — whose exaggerations, half-truths and outright falsehoods are well documented — could provide false statements or easily become distracted.

[...]

Mr. Trump said on Twitter on Tuesday that it was “disgraceful” that questions the special counsel would like to ask him were publicly disclosed, and he incorrectly noted that there were no questions about collusion.
He says that about everything. As for the public disclosure, what his tweet sai was it's disgraceful that the questions were "leaked".

Mueller's team doesn't leak, but Trump hopes people think that's what happened by posting the tweet. And again, the Comey memos were not classified when he gave them to a friend.
[The questions were] read by the special counsel investigators to the president’s lawyers, who compiled them into a list. That document was provided to The Times by a person outside Mr. Trump’s legal team.
Who got them from Mr. Trump's legal team.
The majority relate to possible obstruction of justice, demonstrating how an investigation into Russia’s election meddling grew to include an examination of the president’s conduct in office. Among them are queries on any discussions Mr. Trump had about his attempts to fire Mr. Mueller himself and what the president knew about possible pardon offers to Mr. Flynn.

[...]

In one of the more tantalizing inquiries, Mr. Mueller asks what Mr. Trump knew about campaign aides, including the former chairman Paul Manafort, seeking assistance from Moscow: “What knowledge did you have of any outreach by your campaign, including by Paul Manafort, to Russia about potential assistance to the campaign?” No such outreach has been revealed publicly.

[...]

Mr. Mueller wanted to inquire about public threats the president made, conflicting statements from Mr. Trump and White House aides, the president’s private admissions to Russian officials, a secret meeting at an island resort, WikiLeaks, salacious accusations and dramatic congressional testimony.
Will Trump's legal team refuse to let him answer?  Even in writing?  I can only assume that on many of the questions, Mueller already has evidence from other sources, and any untruthful answer Trump gives will trap him.
“What was the purpose of your Jan 27, 2017, dinner with Mr Comey, and what was said?”

Mueller also zeroes in on Trump’s TV interview with journalist Lester Holt, in which he said he had been considering the Russian matter when he fired Comey. “What did you mean in your interview with Lester Holt about Mr Comey and Russia?”

Even Trump’s Twitter feed is under the spotlight. On 12 May 2017, the president wrote: “James Comey better hope that there are no ‘tapes’ of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!” Mueller wants to know the purpose of that tweet.

  The Guardian
Yes, I'd like to see what kind of knots they'll tie themselves into trying to make that look innocent.

UPDATE:

Charles P Pierce has the obvious analysis of the "leak".

Bet

The next couple of press conferences Sarah Sanders holds, in a 180 from her normal attitude toward the press, she's going to act sweet (as sweet as she's capable of) to the White House correspondents.

Except maybe Jim Acosta.

...but hey, do what you want...you will anyway.

Aunt Lydia

Not having seen The Handmaid's Tale, I was appreciative of this explainer of Michelle Wolf's joke about Sarah Sanders at the White House Correspondents Association dinner. I was surprised at all the backlash accusing Wolf of making jokes about Sanders' looks, as I didn't interpret any of her harsh Sanders snark to be about the beast-woman's looks. (I, myself, have a hard time not remarking on her looks - she looks just like what I would offer as a German death camp matron.)
Though the Aunt Lydia joke was sharp, it was not a reference to Sander’s looks, unless you think Ann Dowd, who plays the character, is unattractive (she’s not). The Aunt Lydia jab was a direct reference to how Sanders is used as a tool by Trump and, arguably, the entire patriarchy to keep women down. In The Handmaid’s Tale, the Aunts are a class of women assigned to brainwash new Handmaids with the government’s beliefs and mores, and help the women accept their fates as birth vessels. Aunt Lydia uses torture, such as shocking Handmaids with cattle prods, whipping them, and partially blinding one divergent Handmaid in an effort to gain complete obedience. “I’m sorry, Aunt Lydia,” is one of the first phrases that a new Handmaid learns.

In season 2, which gets even more bleak (warning, spoilers ahead!), Aunt Lydia has the women rounded up and brought to an out of use sports field, where they are nearly hanged for not following her orders. Aunt Lydia is given a lot of power by the leaders of Gilead; as women who are beyond the childbearing age and sympathetic to the cause, Aunts control the destiny of enslaved women. They literally hold the lives of Handmaids in their grip. They actively strip away both the rights of other women and their control over their bodies, all while convincing them it is in their best interest.

Sanders is used as a mouthpiece to protect those in the Trump administration. Much like Aunt Lydia, she lies to Americans who are having their rights stripped away.

Also, I especially liked this Sanders joke: "“I think she’s very resourceful. But she burns facts and then she uses that ash to create a perfect smokey eye." That's also not about her looks.  (And if you're going to say it is, then it's a compliment to her eye makeup.)

To all those pearl-clutchers scandalized because they thought Wolf's jokes were about Sanders' looks - look to yourself: you're obviously reading something in because Sanders' looks are on your mind. Oh, and, look to your president, who has time and again insulted women (or praised them) over their looks. It's the only thing about a woman he seems to deem worth noting.
