Trump's rape case damages trial went off...well...

After a delay of three days due to a covid scare in the courtroom, E Jean Carroll's damages trial got going today.

Judge Kaplan is keeping it tight.
[Kaplan's] regular courtroom has a “No Smoking”-style sign outside the doors with a cellphone in a crossed out circle. Trump’s ongoing trial is taking place inside a different room, but court security officers make a habit of instructing spectators not to bring any inside the proceedings.

Former President Donald Trump’s campaign spokesman was booted out of court on Thursday afternoon after his cellphone alarm went off in the middle of a witness’s testimony [...] .

"Whose telephone is that?" senior U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan asked sharply.

After Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung raised his hand, Kaplan told court security officers: "Take this man out of here.”

A federal jurist with three decades of experience — and a reputation for maintaining strict compliance with the rules he lays down — Kaplan has presided over both of Carroll’s lawsuits against the former president. The first one ended in a $5 million verdict against Trump for sexual abuse and defamation, and the ongoing one threatens to pile on millions more if Carroll prevails.

Aaaaand....they're off!

I wonder if the reason Joe Tacopina left the Trump attorney lineup recently had anything to do with this issue of Trump not testifying at the actual trial where Tacopina reportedly advised him not to.  And now Trump's mad about it.

I'm kind of surprised that didn't get a remark from the judge.

And we'll be hearing from Trump in front of TV cameras and on "Truth Social" next.

Stay tuned.

UPDATE 01:39 pm:

After Habba asked if Trump denied the allegations because Carroll made the claim, Trump replied: "Exactly right," before trailing off: "She said something. I considered it a false accusation," prompting an objection. Kaplan sustained and struck the second part of the answer.

Asked if he wanted to hurt Carroll, Trump said: "No. I wanted to defend myself, my family, and frankly, the presidency." Kaplan struck that too. With that, his direct examination was over, and his cross was similarly brief.

On his way out, Trump sneered at the spectators in the gallery and said, "It's not America. It's not America. This is not America."

UPDATE 01/26/2024:

Trump attended closing arguments but stormed out before Carroll's attorney finished. Great publicity, I guess.
