Shades of '68

Black US athletes still struggling for respect and equality, using the Olympics as a tool...

Raven Saunders, Tokyo 2021:

Tommie Smith and John Carlos, Mexico 1968:

Netflix is currently streaming "The Stand", a documentary about Smith and Carlos at the Olympics.  I didn't realize they had taken off their shoes and went to the podium in black socks, to symbolize the poverty of black Americans at the time.

All three medalists paid a price, the Australian just for wearing a human rights button.  Smith and Carlos were kicked out of the Olympics, and of course faced heated blowback in the states.

I also didn't realize Tommie Smith won the gold medal running with a freshly pulled groin muscle.
