What's that about kids and coronavirus?

A nine-year-old girl in Putnam County, Fla., died of coronavirus on July 18, health officials confirmed Thursday. She is the youngest person to die of COVID-19 in the state.

She had not had close contact with anyone who recently tested positive for COVID-19, and her case was not travel related, the Florida Department of Health told the Miami Herald.

Her death comes as public health officials have been increasingly warning young people of their susceptibility to infection, especially after initial reports that suggested young people were not at risk.

The nine-year-old is the fifth minor to die from COVID-19 in Florida, the Miami Herald reported, after a 17-year-old boy in Pasco County, a 16-year-old girl in Lee County, an 11-year-old boy in Miami-Dade County and an 11-year-old girl in Broward County.
