Literally, another day in America, another mass killing

Yesterday, Texas.  Today, Ohio
Nine people in Ohio have been killed and at least 16 injured in the second mass shooting in the US in less than 24 hours.

Police said the suspect opened fire in the Oregon district of the city of Dayton at 1am local time on Sunday, before being shot and killed by responding officers.

Matt Carper, of the Dayton police department, said the shooting had taken place “over a very short timeline” on the city’s East 5th Street. He said nine people were known to have been killed, not including the shooter, and that at least 16 others were injured.

The Ohio shooting came hours after a young man allegedly opened fire in a crowded shopping area in El Paso, Texas, leaving 20 dead and more than two dozen injured.

Days before, on 28 July, a 19-year-old shot and killed three people, including two children, at the Gilroy garlic festival in northern California.

That makes Sunday’s shooting in Dayton the 22nd mass killing in the US this year. The first 20 mass killings in the US in 2019 claimed 96 lives.

Mayor Nan Whaley said the shooter used a ".223 high-capacity" gun and had additional magazines with him. The .223 caliber is used in rifles like the AR-15 assault rifle used in previous mass shootings.

"In less than one minute, Dayton first responders neutralized the shooter," Whaley said.

"I really want to -- think about that minute. The shooter was able to kill nine people and injure 26 in less than a minute. And if we did not have police in the Oregon District and the thousands of people in the Oregon District enjoying their Saturday evening, what we could have had in this city," Whaley said.

Police believe the suspect acted alone and that there is no remaining threat to the community, but the investigation is ongoing, Carper said.

Police in Dayton, Ohio, on Sunday identified the suspected gunman in a mass shooting that killed nine people.

Lt. Col. Matt Carper told reporters that the suspect was Connor Betts, a 24-year-old white male.

Carper added the suspect's sister, 22-year-old Meghan Betts, was among the victims early Sunday.

Six of the nine victims were African Americans, he added. However, law enforcement said they are not yet investigating a hate crime as a motivation for the shootings, according to CBS News. Betts has no previous police record, and was not on the radar of police before the shooting, according to authorities.

His sister was hanging out with black people? Was that a problem?
On LinkedIn, a profile that appears to belong to Betts lists him as a student at Sinclair Community College and a crew member at Chipotle Mexican Grill. In the "About" section he describes himself as "Good under pressure. Fast learner. Eager to overachieve."

Public records indicate that Betts was registered to vote, listing his party affiliation as Democrat. His only prior offenses were two speeding tickets in 2013 and 2014.
