Can It Get Any Worse?

Don't answer that question.
Speaking by telephone on Wednesday, Mr. Bannon delivered a broad indictment of the news media.

Mr. Bannon spoke in blunt but calm tones, peppered with profanity, and humorously referred to himself as “Darth Vader.” He said, with ironic relish, that Mr. Trump was elected by a surge of support from “the working-class hobbits and deplorables.”

“The media should be embarrassed and humiliated and keep its mouth shut and just listen for a while.”

The conversation was initiated by Mr. Bannon to offer praise for Mr. Spicer, who has been criticized this week for making false claims at the White House podium.

Asked if he was concerned that Mr. Spicer had lost credibility with the news media, Mr. Bannon chortled. “Are you kidding me?” he said. “We think that’s a badge of honor. ‘Questioning his integrity’ — are you kidding me? The media has zero integrity, zero intelligence, and no hard work.”

[Trump and his cohort] have instructed the American people on what to believe, whom to hate and how badly they can behave. And yet we continue to be surprised by each bullying pronouncement, most recently by chief White House strategist Stephen K Bannon’s suggestion that the “humiliated” media might do well to “keep its mouth shut.”

Trump has referred to reporters as being “among the most dishonest people on earth,” and his press secretary insisted that journalists should be “held accountable” for reporting the truth.

But what’s newly disturbing is the phrasing and tone of Bannon’s statement.

By ordering the media to shut its mouth, Bannon is implying that what he would really like to do is discredit, censor and silence the press: to shut our mouths for us.

And how many of you will do it?

...but hey, do what you will anyway.
