NBC Needs a Hacking 101 Lesson

An NBC report claims that any visiting American’s computer or mobile device would be hacked almost immediately at the Olympics.

To investigate the cyber-threat, NBC news Chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel partnered with security expert Kyle Wilhoit. Together they used two fresh computers and a laptop, which, the report said, were hacked within 24 hours of operation in Russia.

The report said “American athletes and fans are entering a minefield the moment they log in to the internet” in Russia, and suggested leaving all digital devices at home.

The experiment (conducted in Moscow, not in Sochi) apparently was meant to test the threat posed by Olympics-related websites in Russia’s .ru internet domain to inexperienced users. This threat, however, doesn’t depend on the physical location of the computer exposed.

Wilhoit, the expert cited by the NBC report who did all the technical work for the hacking experiment, is currently is writing a whitepaper on it.

“A line from the paper: ‘In this case, he would have been hit in Russia; just the same way he would if in Philadelphia,’” Wilhoit tweeted.

In his opinion, the essence of his findings is as follows: “If you’re a stupid user, don't patch your shit, and click on Olympic themed sites and randomly click ‘yes’, ur good.”
